When: Mon. March 19, 2018, 5 p.m.
Where: NELHA Gateway Center
Presenter: William Twibell

Friends of NELHA announces the one-man Art Show of Gyotaku by William Twibell, at the Gateway Visitor Center; the opening will be at the Kona Science Café session March 19, 2018. (5-8 PM). There will also be an informative talk at that time about whale sharks in Hawaii by the Hawaii Uncharted Research Collective. Light refreshments will be served after the program. It is free and open to the public. The show will include many species of fish and crustaceans illustrating those produced by tenants of the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA). Kona Kampachi, Big Island Abalone, Kona Cold Lobster, SPF shrimp and crabs are a few of the prints displaying colors and details of the specimens. In addition, prints of stripped marlin, spearfish, ono, mu, 120 lb. ulua, parrotfish and many other beautiful Hawaiian fish will be included.

Mr. Twibell is a master nature printer who has exhibited in the Smithsonian Institute and had one-man shows in the Waikiki Aquarium, Che-pasta Restaurant Honolulu, and Bank of America in Arcata, California, Carmel and Woodland. The Fish Market Restaurant displays his prints in Palo Alto, Menlo Park, San Diego, California and Phoenix Arizona. His prints were also part of a Gyotaku Show in Japan. Bill enjoys instructing workshops on the 3 methods of nature printing, direct, indirect and transprinting.

Bill has lived in Kona for the past seven years and eight years on Molokai, in between, he taught Fish Printing for 25 years at Humboldt State University. He was a founding member of the Nature Printing Society in 1975 and is the only fish printer to have printed a Sperm Whale Tale 7’ x 14’. His dream is to print an entire deceased whale that washes up on shore. Capturing the detail, color and size of many diverse biological specimens for the past 47 years has been his passion. It is astounding how nature prints capture the detail and color and of course size of many diverse specimens. Prints are made by pressing paper or cloth on top of the actual inked fish.

He presently sells his work at the Kailua Village Artists Gallery in Kailua, the Harbor Gallery, Kawaihai as well as his studio in Kona Palisades. All displayed works are available for purchase.

After the presentation, we will have pupus, drinks, and conversation. We are informal and it is potluck, so please bring a pupu and non-alcoholic beverage to share. Reusable plates and cups are encouraged, as is taking home your own trash.
